Die religious Manuel García Viejo, infected with Ebola in … – RTVE

Manuel García Viejo, religious of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God (OHSJD) infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone, died Thursday at the Carlos III Hospital, where he was being admitted from the past Monday morning, as reported by hospital officials.

García Viejo, received no experimental treatment against Ebola virus , which has claimed nearly 3,000 lives in West Africa , was medical director of the Hospital San Juan de Dios Lunsar (Sierra Leone) and came to Spain on Monday repatriated by the Government. His death occurred at 17:55 hours, after that in the last hours of his worsening health condition occurred.

Religious, 69, admitted to “serious” condition, dehydrated with symptoms of high fever and a “marked hepatorenal disease,” according to the initial diagnosis of the medical staff attending him.

Since joining alternative treatment was studied to ZMapp, already given to religious Miguel Pajares died last August at the same hospital by the same virus, finding that drug exhausted. García Viejo thus becomes the second fatality in Spain because of this infectious disease.

Born in Folgoso de la Ribera (León), besides being the medical director of the Hospital San Juan de Dios Lunsar Vierjo García was a surgeon, doctor specialist Internal Medicine and a diploma in tropical medicine, and belonged to the OHSJD 52 years.

In past 30 years he worked in Africa (Ghana, Cameroon and Sierra Leone) and, of those, the last twelve was medical director of the Hospital San Juan de Dios in Lunsar.

Religious received care in a Unit Ebola Freetown hospital after being diagnosed with the disease in the early hours of Friday, and after being sick several days.

On Sunday, April 21, expressed his desire to be repatriated to Spain and The Government then launched a second time a protocol for repatriation.
