MADRID (Reuters) – Six aldermen of the City of Badalona will have to testify in court as investigated by opening the doors of the consistory of October 12, a public holiday at a national level, despite the previous ban of a judge, said Tuesday the high Court of Justice of Catalonia.

Several members of the city Council defied the temporary suspension of judicial issued on the eve of the holiday, and opened the facilities of the Catalan town, the third largest population of Catalonia, during the National day of Spain.

During the action, the third lieutenant of mayor of the town, José Téllez, broke a document with the car which included the court’s decision not to open the town Hall in front of journalists and called it “a coup against the sovereignty municipal”.

The judge suspended confiscate the opening to consider that the national holiday was motivated “to social and cultural reasons, which reflect a general interest” and that forced the workers to significarse politically, which interferes with his freedom of ideology.

The controversy adds to the tensions between the administrations policies Catalan and Spanish before the independence demands of a growing sector of the Catalan population.

The intention of opening the consistory of October 12, the day on which it is considered that there was first contact between Europe and America with the arrival of Columbus in 1492, was announced days before by the mayor Dolors Sabater, he justified the action by the connotations of “colonialism” and “ethnic genocide” which said that it was the Spanish fiesta.

Sabater, replaced in the mayor’s office to the leader of the Popular Party in Catalonia, Xavier García Albiol, after the latest municipal elections with the votes of Guanyem Badalona in Common, PSC, ERC, ICV-EUiA and CDC.

Albiol, who announced the filing of the complaint by the Popular Party against the City of Badalona, which has now led to the subpoena of the six city council members, has offered to the socialists their support to get Sabater of the Mayor’s office, even though they have rejected it.
