The Prosecutor’s office of Guatemala launched an internal policy of gender equality – Terra Colombia

The Public Ministry of Guatemala today presented a policy for equality between women and men and women of the entity in order to promote an institutional culture respectful of human rights, inclusive, equal, without distinctions for reasons economic, gender and ethnic origin.

This draft, presented on Monday, includes the provision of institutional policies with a focus on gender, multiculturalism and human rights; a domestic law that incorporates a focus on gender, multiculturalism and human rights, and promote equality within the Office.

This program was built on a participatory process among the officials of the Prosecutor’s office, with the technical support of the Project Security and Justice of the united States Agency for International Development (USAID, for its acronym in English).

This roadmap provides for the creation of a Monitoring Mechanism for the implementation of the policy formed by women, and whose purpose is to put operational guidelines that are exposed.

The advisor of the Gender Unit of the Public Ministry (MP), Alejandra González stated that there are to ensure “equality in fact and in law” between men and women, and in this sense is meant the strategy presented this Monday.

For his part, Rodrigo Jimenez, the Foundation for Justice and Gender, emphasized that it was Guatemala the first country that established in Latin America, the specialized courts on violence against women, and today becomes the first to have a policy and an operating plan within the Office.

“All these little examples, but large impacts for the Justice that has been due to a lot of women and men”, summed up, and the attorney general, Thelma Aldana, added that the woman was one of his priorities since assuming office in 2014: “despite the advances there is a gap well marked between men and women to achieve equality”.

This should be continued, limited access to Justice, the low political participation of women, the wage gap in the same position, and so on.

it Is for this reason that it is program will help to improve this situation from a perspective and a gender focus, because while you may not be achieved, the equality will not be achieved on the path of peace and development, he concluded.

last year, 11.299 cases of sexual violence were reported in the central american country, which represents approximately 31 per day.

Since 2009 there is in Guatemala, the Law Against Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Trafficking of People that has helped convict some of the perpetrators, but thousands of girls are still giving birth each year product of rape.
