The mep Malin Björk believes that genital mutilation is a form of control over women – European Parliament (press Release)

Malin Björk, of the parliamentary committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, believes that female genital mutilation has nothing to do with religion, but that is a form of control over the body and sexuality of women. The UN estimates that 200 million women and girls have undergone some form of genital mutilation. Mep Swedish explains what it means to this practice in an interview on the occasion of the international day in support of zero tolerance.

What magnitude is the problem and where it comes from?

according To the World Health Organization, 200 million girls and women have suffered and survived the genital mutilation. The practice is more ancient than christianity or islam. It is not linked to religion but to the patriarchy. Female genital mutilation is a way of controlling the body and the sexuality of the woman.

What does the EU do to curb this practice? What more could I do?

The European Parliament has adopted several resolutions submitted by the parliamentary committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality against female genital mutilation. The EU and its member States must continue to support financially those organizations and movements that promote health and sexual and reproductive rights of women, including the right to contraception and to safe and legal abortion.

are There refugee women victims or at risk of suffering from this mutilation?

Yes, there can be refugee women who are victims, or are at risk, and which of course must receive medical attention and appropriate support. We must also ensure that genital mutilation be considered a reason for asylum. And we have good laws against it.

however, I think it is extremely important not to isolate this type of mutilation and the fight against it. It has to be seen as a form of violence, and as feminists we have to reject all forms of gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation.

Together. We have to combat violence against women in all fronts, whether it is a question of genital mutilation or other forms of violence or abuse, physical, sexual or psychological.

We are seeing constant attacks against the rights of women all over the world. The administration Trump has just re-introduce the call to the global rules of the caliper, stopping all of the funding to development organizations that support the right to abortion. And in Russia, the domestic violence was descriminalizada. The underlying factor of violence against women is not religion or identity, but the patriarchate.
