Cuba celebrates World Wetlands Day – Prensa Latina

02 February, 2017 02:05Havana, 2 feb (PL) The World Wetlands Day is celebrated today in Cuba with a group of activities dedicated to create awareness about the value of these ecosystems to humanity.

Among these proposals is the exposure Ciénaga de Zapata, the largest wetland and the best preserved in the Insular Caribbean, which will open this afternoon at the National Museum of natural History, located in the historic center of havana, reported the organizers.

this sample is added to a number of activities in the different provinces of the country, such as workshops, scientific exchange, festivals of community involvement, drawing competitions and cultural events, among others.

in this regard, allegorical to the date, it will be a feast dedicated to the conservation of the mangroves, scheduled for next Saturday at the Surgidero de Batabanó, the western province of Mayabeque.

The event, called the Festival of the Mountain, is organized by the initiative Plant!, of the Cuban Society of Botany (SCB) and the draft Mangrove-Living, of the Environment Agency (AMA).

The festival, which on this occasion will count with the support of the Global Fund for the Environment through the United Nations Program for Development, proposes a space to promote a scientific culture and the desire of research on children and young people.

Also, the event will be supported by the University of Havana, the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, the Background of a british Whitley to the Nature, the Foundation Segré and Brigades Techniques Youth, among other organizations.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated on the 2nd of February in 1977, in commemoration of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran, on same date in 1971.

This pact is the first treaty in the planet relating to the conservation and the rational use of the systems wetlands are considered areas of use for human activities such as tourism and fishing.

Plant! it is an initiative of the Cuban Society of Botany that has as its goal the preservation of the rich and unique flora of Cuba, and the sustainable management of the same.

For its part, the draft Mangrove Live plans to increase the capacity of adaptation to the effects of climate change on the populations that inhabit the coastal area in cuba’s western provinces of Artemisa and Mayabeque.
