The cold wave that affects the whole of Spain, with minimum temperatures of 12 degrees below zero, caused an unusual snowfall in the always warm mediterranean coast and some of its beaches appeared today with a white blanket.

The snowfall caused cuts in roads to the north and east of Spain, both the primary network and secondary, as well as the prohibition of the traffic of trucks and buses on the Mediterranean motorway AP-7, said today the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

Murcia (south-east), one of the provinces with milder temperatures and less precipitation, is today hit by snow, with many roads cut off.

The same thing occurs in the Balearic islands, where the plates of ice formed during the last morning led to the closure of various routes of the island.

The snow also left without a class to 28,000 students from 14 municipalities of the region of Valencia.

Several towns in Valencia and Alicante, some of the provinces most touristic of Spain, for its mild climate, appeared today with the heaviest snowfall in nearly a century (since 1926) and a striking white blanket of several inches covered the landscape.

The temporal cold is causing a succession of prints previously unpublished in coastal towns, such as Torrevieja, Denia or Javea, where the snow came almost unprecedented up to their beaches.

The State Agency of Meteorology (Aemet) forecast for tomorrow a more intense phase of the cold in Valencia and activated the red alert (extreme risk) for snowfall in areas of the interior and the north coast of Alicante, and in the interior south of the province of Valencia.

The intense cold that affects the whole of Spain, except the Canary islands (Atlantic), activated devices and protocols to care for and protect the most vulnerable people, many of them without homes.

The low temperatures that are registered in the country also have an impact on the power consumption, and for today’s expected peak demand which has not been recorded since 2012, according to forecasts of the public company Red Eléctrica de España (REE).
