MADRID (Reuters) – The Constitutional Court rejected on Thursday the suppression of the reform that reinforced its powers, including to suspend public officials who disobey, a measure which was taken with the sunset view on the political independence of Catalonia.
The Court rejected by eight votes in favour and three against, the appeal of the basque Government against the reform of the Organic Law of the Constitutional Court 2015, the Executive of Mariano Rajoy reinforced the court in response to the rise of the sovereignty of the Catalan language.
The reform, which was passed thanks to the absolute majority of the Partido Popular and blamed for the rest of the Parliament, allows the Constitutional fine for public office and to suspend indefinitely the authorities that will challenge, without the possibility of appeal.
In recent years there have been numerous court rulings against the Government of Catalonia, which has launched a roadmap towards the independence of Catalonia that includes a referendum that they want to have binding in 2017.
One of the last steps given by the high court has been to open the possibility of acting in criminal proceedings against the president of the Parliament, Carme Forcadell, for allowing last July for a vote on the calendar-building for the separation of Catalonia from Spain.
