Why we awoke exhausted after sleeping in a new place? – The Tribuno.com.ar

How many times has happened to us that after going to sleep to a new site, either the house of an acquaintance or a hotel, we do not get adequate sleep and woke up almost more tired than we were? A team of researchers from Brown University in Providence (USA) has discovered why this happens.

According to experts, the first night in another bed, for reasons that are unknown the moment, there is a hemisphere of the brain, specifically the left, that stays awake and vigilant during sleep. It is what is known as “Effect First Night” or more popularly known as “sleep with one eye open.”

“One of the hemispheres of the brain remains awake during sleep to watch. The dream is often significantly worse during the first night both a hotel and in a sleep laboratory. in the latter context, researchers often have to plan an ‘adaptation night’ in their experiments, “says Yuka Sasaki, leader of the study.

Experiment

the researchers used advanced imaging techniques in a group of 35 participants who examined their brains in sleep phase. The data revealed that the two hemispheres of the brain showed different patterns of activity. Thus, the left hemisphere in all participants, was always the one who was so alert, more awake.

According to experts, this asymmetry in activity had been explained by the difficulty of volunteers when to sleep in the laboratory for the first night. That moment was critical because during the following nights that lasted the experiment again not to this differentiation activity patterns of the cerebral hemispheres.

One possible solution?

” the human brain is very flexible and just adapting to new situations, “says Sasaki. One possible solution would be to take it personally that it is known to us and close to the room where we sleep, as our own pillow or search for places that are familiar to us.

The study has been published in the journal Current Biology .
