Puigdemont: The independence plan of Catalonia has no reverse gear – La Nacion (Argentina)

The regional president, who defrosted dialogue with Rajoy, remains strong separatist challenge; opined that the country’s image would “reinforced in the world if authorize a binding referendum”

Carles BARCELONA.- Puigdemont has the ability to laugh at himself. It is presented as the “unexpected president,” referring to his election as head of the Catalan government in the run time for the political deadlock forced new elections.

One hundred days after his administration also travels on roads not entirely expected. He slowed the pace of the separatist rebellion, thawed this week the dialogue with the government of Mariano Rajoy-broken in the final stretch of his predecessor and even political leader, Artur Mas, and negotiates with Madrid avenues for financial oxygen.

But with calm voice and lots of smiles, this reporter 53-year battle for still stands firm meet the challenge. “The plan of the independence of Catalonia no going back. Anyone who thinks that because you do not hear too much of us nothing happens will be surprised,” he says in a dialogue with a group of foreign correspondents, including LA NATION.

But Puigdemont inherited the habit of hiding the letters. It postponed the promised “laws disconnect” capable of unleashing a great judicial conflict, and returned the claim of a referendum on Scottish style.

Just slide some clues. the option to convene other regional elections, such as last September, in which separatist parties won a majority of seats reserves, but they stayed in 48% of the vote. This time called these “plebiscitary” elections. The next step would be to raise them as “constituent”.

-After fixed election 18 months to break. Already no more talk of deadlines? ¿Ruled a unilateral declaration?

No talk of a unilateral declaration in the classic sense. Our mandate is to leave everything resolved to place constituent polls and call a referendum so that the next day, if approved, independence is proclaimed. This requires taking sovereign decisions before. The calendar can be adjusted because there are external factors that can influence. What will happen to the Brexit, what kind of government will be in Spain, what will happen with the prosecution of the Catalan process?

You said once that the relationship between Spain and Catalonia it is beyond reform. What sense does the dialogue opened with Rajoy?

‘For many years we believed that we could reforming Spain feel comfortable. However, we conclude that Spain does not want to be reformed. But at the same time we have to exercise the constitutional powers. We are in the meantime.

Puigdemont insists that there is no way to reach an agreement that keeps Catalonia in Spain. “It is a mistake to believe that the problem is Rajoy. It is the Spanish state which does not include Catalonia” he says.

He says he will not be he who refuses to Spanish politicians reach a last-minute deal to prevent new elections, something that will be inevitable if nothing changes in the next few hours. But options do not see a repetition of the elections change the landscape.

The only party that promotes a referendum is we. “I see no scenario in which they can be in charge. Socialism has already demonstrated that the subject thinks the same as the PP. If it were not so, he would be ruling Pedro Sanchez.”

In his vision , “the image of Spain would greatly reinforced in the world if authorize a binding referendum on the independence of Catalonia”. He believes that “the vast majority of Spanish society would accept it, because it has a democratic maturity well above the average of its leadership”.

Their pressure strategy includes meetings with diplomats (from more than 20 countries and ) and an imminent visit to Brussels to convey the European Union’s intention to move towards separation. Negotiates parallel trial with Rajoy funds to alleviate the serious fiscal problems of his administration.

How much has to do in its attitude dialoguista the delicate economic situation in Catalonia?

-just because the situation is very delicate we should be independent. This does not take any more. It is impossible to continue serving our people if we do not have state structures to support it. The Spanish state sometimes goes to the contras. It seems that its mission is to asphyxiate Catalonia. We are the second or third community where it is collected. But in the cast we spent the post 10 and in real terms (adjusted for cost of living), to 14. It is ridiculous that an economy that generates surplus can not be financed by their own means

. – How will you carry out the break when even half said yes in the election?

That could only know from a legal referendum. Let us vote. If we use the results of the elections and referendum in key read, there is a clear political majority. In any case, this is an integrated project. We want to convince everyone that the best is a state.
