Arrested in Spain suspected jihadists – La Gaceta Tucumán

MADRID The Spanish police arrested yesterday in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, located in North Africa, four suspected jihadists “strongly radicalized” and ready to attack, according to the Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz.

These are two pairs of brothers of Spanish nationality and Moroccan origin with “psychological preparation, physical and weapons handling,” the government official in Madrid told reporters .

Fernández Díaz stressed that the cell dismantled saved “many parallels” with the terrorists who bombed two weeks ago in Paris against French satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo”, an attack in which 12 people died. As reported by the Spanish newspaper “El Pais”, there would be a cell uptake intended to send fighters to Syria and Iraq to fight there with terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State (EI), but a group linked to Al Qaeda could prepare a “not yet documented” terrorist action. In the records kept by police early today combat uniforms, knives and some handguns were found, Spanish media reported.

This is the first arrests that are made in Spain in connection with jihadism after the attacks in Paris. The Spanish government then raised to a degree the terror alert.

The Interior Minister said that in Spain there is a level of “additional” terrorist risk relative to other countries, but the country is not “out of that threat.” The anti-terrorist operation was directed by the Audiencia Nacional and coordinated by the Spanish prosecutor.

The enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, on the border with Morocco, are considered “hot spots” for being the place of departure for many of the jihadists traveling from Spain to conflict countries like Syria or Iraq to join terrorist organizations. (DPA)
