Hands and voices join to celebrate in Cuba the advent of the International Day of Deaf People, the last Sunday of the month. The date was instituted to show the richness of the Deaf culture, celebrate the achievements of the communities of every country that hosts the festivities, and in some places, to enforce the rights of the people with this disability.

At the meeting, the National Association of the Deaf of Cuba recognized with the distinction Hands of the Glass to a group of professionals, institutions and projects, which in one way or another have contributed to the greater social inclusion of deaf people.

Among the projects recognized are Culture among the hands, of the Office of the Historian and his station Havana Radio, Art Cut-Gilberto Valladares, Daddy, Ties of smile of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, UNEAC, the Planetarium of Havana, and the project Paths and Gaits, who in some measure have contributed to the social and cultural development of the Deaf community in Cuba.

Many people in Cuba have shown sensitivity and total dedication, in the pursuit of cultural development of the members of the deaf community, and have decided to show the world what these people know and can do.

The National Day for the World Day of the Deaf will also take place in the rest of the country, with the participation of the offices of provincial Association of the Deaf. Each one of them will develop during the week of activities aimed at children, young people and adults with hearing impairment.

The web site of the radio station Habana Radio public that in Cuba there are more than 23 000 people who are Deaf, who during this week will be visible in your reality, manifest their rights, aspirations and will present all the richness of their culture and language.

The International Day of Deaf People is a celebration that dates back to 1958, and was endorsed by the World Federation of Deaf People who chose this date to commemorate the first World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf that took place in September 1951.
