Greenpeace published Thursday the “ Plastic s in fish and seafood” study which reveals that every second over 200 kilos of plastic are thrown into seas and oceans, which means that each year 8 million tons of plastic are piling up.
According to the report, it is estimated that there are currently between 5 and 50 billion fragments plastic at sea, “not including pieces deposited on the seabed or on the beaches”.
Greenpeace estimates that over the next four years, plastic production increased 900 percent over 1980 figures, meaning that 50 million tons will be produced annually. Half of this increase will be made in the course of the last decade.
The accumulation of plastic s in the oceans has led to the emergence five major Great Pacific Garbage Patch two in the Pacific, two in the Atlantic and one in the Indian Ocean. These islands represent 15 percent of garbage left on the sea surface, while 70 percent is accumulates at the bottom. A remaining 15 percent remains in the water.
80 percent of the waste reaches the sea was generated on land.
