MADRID, Spain. (AP) _ The crash of a Greek F16 fighter who participated in a practice flight of NATO in Spain left at least 10 dead and 13 wounded in a military air base, the Ministry of Defence.
The plane lost power on take-off and crashed into a platform in which there were planes from several countries with pilots on board ready to participate in these exercises. The accident, which took place at the base of Los Llanos in the center of the country, caused a large explosion and fire that took hours to suffocate.
The deceased are from different countries of NATO, but Defense he could not specify the nationalities. Nine of the 13 injured were Italians, according to the Italian Ministry of Defense. The Spanish government said that seven injured are in critical condition, five prognosis and one was discharged.
Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of NATO, was appalled by what happened and said that is a “tragedy.”
“I want to move my heartfelt condolences to the families and countries who have lost their lives,” Stoltenberg said. “I also wish a speedy recovery to the wounded.”
The aircraft involved in training the Tactical Leadership Program of NATO. The program is taught in Spanish base of Los Llanos since 2009 and aims to improve skills and techniques tactical air forces of the Alliance.
The countries that are part of the program are Belgium, UK, Denmark, . France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United States
