The Spanish security forces have arrested today the historic leader of ETA Santiago Arrospide Sarasola, Santi Colts in relation to an attack in 1986 against former state attorney general and one made a year later, the Ministry of Interior.

The arrest, by order of the High Court, took place in the Basque town of Lasarte (north), in an operation involving jointly Police and Civil Guard.

The detainee, who will be transferred to Madrid, was released in early December by decision of the National Court discounting the penalties to which he was convicted in France, according to European legislation.

Today’s arrest is due to two processes by which the National Court and requested his extradition to France in 1993 and 1997, but the French country finally granted their delivery by causes other than these two, so in that situation he could not be prosecuted for these two attacks.

However, the judge has ordered now his arrest under the European Convention on Extradition of 1957, which allows detention and persecution by these two causes because, once it has been released (it was from December 4), has not left Spain.

One of the reasons for his arrest is the attempted murder of former state attorney general Buron Barba in Madrid on May 8, 1986, which was when Santo Colts was organizer and leader of the so-called “illegal command” , including that threatened in Madrid.

The second reason relates to the attack in 1987 by the Barcelona ETA command by placing a car bomb in a vehicle of the Civil Guard.

Santi Colts exresponsable the military apparatus of ETA, band then he split, was convicted of ordering the slaughter in a supermarket in Barcelona in 1987, in which 21 people died.

The attack marked a radical shift in the modus operandi of the terrorist organization, as first all casualties were civilians and also was indiscriminate.

The arrested was also sentenced for attack in Madrid which killed 12 policemen in 1986.
