Spanish Socialists to postpone Congress raised while negotiating government – Terra Peru

The Spanish Socialists discuss whether to postpone its congress, scheduled for May and the preparation is mixed with political contacts to try to form a government in the country, if not achieved should call new legislative elections for June.

The current leader of the PSOE, Pedro Sanchez, wants to keep the General Secretariat, which came in 2014, while trying to bring together support for a parliamentary majority to take you to the Presidency of the government.

In neither case has it easy, but its claim to stay ahead of PSOE is reinforced by the negotiations to try to be chief executive.

In the months before the legislative elections last December several socialist leaders from different regions of Spain critical of Sanchez were and those criticisms were redoubled when the party obtained the worst results history, with 350 deputies ninety Congress, behind the ruling PP (123, center-right).

However, the rejection of the PP leader, Mariano Rajoy, to offer the king to submit to debate and vote on investiture led Sanchez to accept second instance, which has him become a key player in Spanish politics over the past two months.

While Sanchez was rejected by Congress twice the PSOE wove a pact with the liberal Citizens (40 seats) and next week will discuss with We (left), because it could be proposed again by the monarch if he can expand his parliamentary support.

According to the deadlines set by the Constitution, Spain must have a new government before May 2 and, otherwise new elections to be convened on June 26.

This calendar is mixed with the internal process of the PSOE, whose members elected in primaries the new leader on May 8, which must be confirmed two weeks later on the 39th Party Congress .

The main rival Sanchez is the president of the region of Andalusia, Susana Diaz, who leads a quarter of the militancy of the PSOE (almost 190,000 in total).

Diaz has never openly admitted that wants to lead the PSOE, but some of his collaborators play with that hypothesis.

If Sanchez succeeds in its goal of being chief executive is likely that no one dares to dispute the leadership of the PSOE, but in any case is not easy for someone else present by fear of splitting the party with the prospect of legislative elections in June.

So sources of the PSOE leadership admitted to Efe that are willing to delay the Congress in May, if most of the regional federations accept moving the date for not interfere in the process of government formation.

Ferraz believes that the initiative to postpone the assembly should from the territories to avoid that could be interpreted that the date change is a move to favor the current secretary general of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez .

“If the federations ask adjourn, no problem, and if they ask to stay, go ahead,” Efe sources point to the address.

The hard core of the Executive stressed that any decision taken must be “by consensus”, as was done when Congress was convened in the Federal Committee held last January 30th.

The calendar starts on April 11, when the deadline for submission of pre-candidates will open to lead the party, which will close on April 14.

The pace of negotiations to form a government makes it difficult for that date has resolved the investiture, so the process would coincide with the collecting endorsements of the candidates, until 25 April.
