The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, guaranteed Monday will be the candidate for reelection by the Popular Party (PP, center-right) in the general elections this year, regardless of what happens on May 24 in regional and municipal elections.
“Yes, yes, I want to be the candidate, and trust me, it will be well,” Rajoy said at a breakfast informative, to the many questions from reporters about whether he will be presented in the general elections his party no matter what happens on May 24.
According to the polls, the ruling PP lose much of its support in the May elections. Analysts say that the main danger to the PP may come from the newly formed Citizens, presented as an alternative center to the two traditional parties in the Spanish political scene, the Popular (PP) and the Socialists (PSOE).
