The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, assured today that will be the candidate for reelection by the Popular Party (PP, center-right) in the general elections this year, regardless of what happens on May 24 in regional and municipal elections.

According to the polls, the ruling PP would lose much of its support in the May elections.
Analysts say that the main danger to the PP may come from the newly formed Citizens, presented as an alternative center to the two traditional parties in the Spanish political scene, the Popular (PP) and the Socialists (PSOE).
