The Archbishop of Barcelona has decided to celebrate the Eucharist despite pressure from the Government and the Government to conduct an interfaith ceremony.
The Cardinal Martínez Sistach of Barcelona has faced controversy and discontent of the Governments of Spain and Catalonia in recent days. The reason was, neither more nor less than Martínez Sistach has remained firm in its stance that the state funeral for the victims of the crash of Germanwings consists of a Catholic Mass and not in a civil ceremony or several confessions religious, as intended from the Generalitat and the central government.
The funeral will take place today at 18 am at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and will consist of a Catholic mass, despite criticism of who wanted a “ceremony of the word” will be held with the participation of different faiths and no Eucharist. The ceremony was attended by the Kings, the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, and the president of the Catalan Executive, Artur Mas.
But has publicly criticized the “closeness” of Cardinal Martínez Sistach, that during the negotiations with the Government claimed that most of the Spanish victims of the crash were Catholic. What has accepted the archbishop of Barcelona is that after the Eucharist involving ministers of other faiths.
The spokesman of the Episcopal Conference, Josemaría Gil-Tamayo, during a press conference supported the position of Martínez Sistach and recalled that “for Catholics the Eucharist is the largest voting can be done for the dead”.
