This old road, built between 1901 and 1905 to join two waterfalls, was in very poor condition.

The path covers a stretch of 3 kilometers, divided between 1.5 kilometers of elevated walkways around 100 meters above the river, and another 1.5 miles of trail or forest trail. At these distances must add 2.7 miles of trail to reach the north entrance, through the town of Ardales, and 2.1 kilometers to the south entrance of Alora.

The road runs through the Sierra Huma . One of the most spectacular views seen in the air path, anchored at 100 meters above the river Guadalhorce relies on Los Gaitanes in El Chorro, some of whose walls reach a height of 700 meters above river level.

The history of Caminito del Rey goes back to the heroic days of early twentieth century, a time when industrialization and modernity advanced hand. On the occasion of the railway construction Córdoba-Málaga, Loring British family who had the concession line, realized the potential it had the Guadalhorce river for power generation.

The engineer Seville Rafael Benjumea, known as the poet and linked to Loring engineer, undertook in 1903 the construction of a large swamp. The works were completed in 1921 and the then King Alfonso XIII placed the last stone. To do maintenance, Benjumea hired dozens of sailors who built a plank road along the wall of the gorge. The sailors, accustomed to working in the hull of boats hanging ropes, were the perfect specialists for work that the grandfather of the present monarch toured despite the heavy rain. Hence the name of Caminito del Rey.

The path was used since then to its original purpose, but also as a means of communication between the residents of Alora and Ardales, passageway of the guys who were at school, and the scene of incredible romantic walks.

The rehabilitation of Caminito was performed with issues climbing specialists, supported from the air by helicopters moved the materials. Unable to restore parts of the old trail, built a new 1.2 kilometer walkway wood panels with metal anchors and drills to the rock wall.
