(Caracas, March 24, 2015) One of the Molotov cocktails thrown at protesters on February 12, 2014 against the headquarters of the Public Ministry, was the one who started the fire in the library of the institution.
This was stated at the trial hearing held on Monday March 23 the witness brought by the prosecution: the safety and security technician III, Efrain Vargas, assigned to the Directorate of Security and Transport of that body.
Speaking before the Court 28th Trial of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas the witness said that had it not been for his quick intervention to quell the fire, it would have spread to the entire building, due to the large number of books and material combustion.
He mentioned that observed when a large number of people arrived at the scene almost noon, and minutes later saw Maria Corina Machado along with other leaders who sought to deliver a course document was not recorded.
Vargas said later spotted Leopoldo López accompanied by the student leader Gabriela Arellano on the roof of a pickup truck, vehicle from which they headed the group that was concentrated in the Carabobo Park Square and doors prosecutors shouting slogans against the national government and the Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz.
He said that after the speech of leaders, people were euphoric and minutes later began violent actions against the headquarters of the institution, especially the library, which was affected by the strong and incendiary devices were thrown to him.
In this sense, the witness described how he had to evacuate from the rear of the library to about 14 people who were working instead; as well as users who were for the time to consult on the books, because safety glasses were broken by repeated objects that cast them.
Additionally, Vargas told how protesters attacked the library throwing stones, nuts, bottles, plus the Molotov cocktail, which caused the fire at the site, flames were quickly smothered with a fire that started in place.
In his testimony recounted the violence with which the demonstrators rammed the Carabobo Park Square and several vehicles belonging to the Body of Research, Scientific, Penal and Criminal.
It is worth remembering that Lopez was charged for being determiner in arson and damage, public incitement and conspiracy.
It is noteworthy that in this case are also on trial Marco Coello and Christian Holdack for allegedly being accomplices in the crimes of public incitement, fire, damage and conspiracy; and Angel Gonzalez and Damian Martin, accused of incitement to commit a crime.
The trial hearing, attended by the Deputy Director of Common Crimes Investigations prosecutors, Juan Carlos Tabares; and national fiscal 2nd and 41st, Narda Sanabria and Franklin Nieves, respectively.
