Propose a conservative as president of Greece – The Universal


 The head of the Greek government, Alexis Tsipras, today appointed former Conservative minister Prokopis Pavlópulos as a candidate to chair the Republic and so opted for a conciliatory personality that achieves broad agreement on their choice in Parliament.
 


 


 “Today we need a president with proven democratic sensibility, which enjoys wide acceptance in society and in the Greek parliament,” said Tsipras, during a speech before the parliamentary group of his leftist Syriza movement which announced the appointment of Pavlópulos.
 


 


 The prime minister said the election of Pavlópulos for the post of president “can help decisively in this difficult situation for the people and the country.”
 


 


 The nomination of conservative politician will be submitted tomorrow to the first vote in Parliament, the regulation sets up three rounds of presidential electio ns.
 


 


 Tsipras surprised with the designation of Pavlópulos because although it was one of the names that are shuffled, community curator of Interior and Migration, Dimitris Avramópulos, started as clear favorite since SYRIZA won the elections last January 25.
 


 


 These elections were held after the election to fail the previous candidate for the Greek presidency, also Conservative politician Stavros Dimas, last December.
 


 


 Dimas did not obtain the necessary in any of the three rounds of voting support, which, according to the Greek Constitution requires the calling of general elections.
 


 


 With the appointment of Pavlópulos, the Executive is committed to a consensus figure, with which the conservative sector of society feel represented in state structures and achieves gather broad support in the Chamber.
 


 


 Pavlópulos, 64 and professor, was interior minister twice since 2004-2009, with governments Kostas Karamanlis’s conservative and for four months served as spokesman for the national unity cabinet Xenophon Zolotas.
 


 


 The presidential candidate is considered one of the people trusted Karamanlis.
 


 


 He was first elected deputy in the elections of 1996 and was part of Parliament until the last legislature.
 


 


 In the elections last January was not presented as a candidate.
 


 


 His party New Democracy announced that support the application, ensuring his election on the first ballot.
