As she explained at a press conference the spokesman of the Catalan Government, and Neus Munté, has been chosen on the 15th of October because “the date coincides with the anniversary of the execution of Lluís Companys”.
Lluís Companys was the president of the Catalan Government between 1934 and 1940, the year in which he was tortured and killed by the forces of dictator Francisco Franco.
The general Francisco Franco, rebelled against the legality of the Second Republic in 1936 and was imposed three years later as the winner of the Civil War resulting from his attempted coup, established a regime of court-fascist in Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975.
The historian and hispanist Paul Preston estimates in his book ‘The Spanish Holocaust’ that the military regime of Franco, killed between 130,000 and 160,000 people away from the field of battle.

As explained by the Executive Catalan, his decision to dedicate a day to honor the victims franco regime complies with the Law of the Democratic Memorial, which in its preamble calls for giving recognition to those people who suffered most in the Civil War and the dictatorship.
