Prohibit religious symbols in public spaces Galician town – CNA

MADRID, 04 May. 16 / 11:23 a.m. ( ACI ) .- The local council of Lalin in the city of Pontevedra (Spain) last week approved a motion that prohibits council members publicly declare their faith and the suppression of all religious symbols in official acts and spaces of public ownership.

the motion also provides for the removal of crosses and sacred images of two municipal cemeteries and exclusion of representatives of any religious denomination of municipal acts.

the proposal came forward for the votes of the parties Commitment Galicia, PSOE, Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) and A Platform Aberta Cidadã (APAC).

From the Association of Christian Lawyers has denounced this motion as they consider unconstitutional, discriminatory and an attack on religious freedom.

Article 14 of the Spanish Constitution states that no citizen may be discriminated against because of their religion.

so the president of Christian Lawyers, Poland Castellanos, accuses the city of Lalin incurring serious discrimination.

“discrimination for religious reasons is prohibited as that exercised by racist, anti-Semitic motives, ideology, gender, sexual orientation, illness or disability, “says Castellanos.

In this situation, Christian Lawyers has launched a petition signatures for the Municipality of Lalin withdraw the motion.
