Spain rescues 44 migrants to the Western Sahara – Terra.com

coastguard rescued 44 African migrants trying to reach Spain in a ship that departed from the west coast of Africa.

The 42 men and two women aboard the boat were taken to the port of Arguineguin, on the Spanish archipelago of Canary Islands, late on Sunday after being rescued before the coast of Western Sahara, about 100 nautical miles (200 kilometers) south of the islands, said coastguard.

Rescuers began searching the vessel after receiving a notice of a non-profit organization, the department said Monday. It migrants were in good health, he added.

Thousands of migrants try to enter Spain each year, either on dangerous sea crossings from West Africa or across the Mediterranean, or jumping the fences separating the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in Morocco.
