The number of immigrants trying to cross the triples … – Publico.es

The Mediterranean has become one of the deadliest for immigrants trying to seek refuge in Europe routes. According to UN figures, 4,272 people have died this year trying to cross different seas to seek asylum or immigration purposes. Of these, 3,419 died in the Mediterranean, where tried to cross to get to Europe to 207,000 immigrants. This figure represents three times the record set in 2011 when 70,000 people left the coast of North Africa to coincide with the chaos caused by the outbreak of the civil war in Libya.

Globally, United Nations has announced that 348,000 immigrants have ventured across different seas during 2014. This year, for the first time, Syrians and Eritreans were the largest component of this human flow to represent 50% of the total, has stated the Office of the High Commissioner United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), an organization that assists those who have fled their homes to escape violence or because they have been victims of disasters.

All these figures were announced on Wednesday to coincide with the first day of an international meeting convened by UNHCR in Geneva to discuss how countries should respond to the growing number of people performing risky journeys to reach places considered safe. High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, lamented that response increasingly “keep out foreigners, instead of supporting asylum”.

“This is a mistake and poor reaction in an era in which a record number of people are fleeing wars,” he said. In Europe, the eastern region of Ukraine is a separatist armed conflict since April; the internal conflict in Libya deepens, like those of Syria and Iraq, with the intervention of the jihadist Islamic State, which has control over northern parts of both countries.

The Mediterranean is not, however, the only route taken for asylum or seek a better future, because this year more than 82,000 people have crossed the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, from the region of Horn of Africa, one of the world’s poor to the rich countries of the Persian Gulf. In this attempt 242 people lost their lives.

This situation is repeated in Southeast Asia, where 54,000 people were thrown into the Indian Ocean, mostly from Bangladesh and Burma to try to go to Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia, a journey in which they perished 540. Also in the Americas this situation occurs, albeit on a smaller scale between Africa and the Middle East, including North Africa and the European Union and Asia. UNHCR noted that there is evidence that at least 4,775 people boarded boats to launch the Caribbean between January 1 and December 1, of which 71 died.

Political refugees in Ceuta and Melilla

As for Spain, UNHCR noted that 60% of immigrants entering Ceuta and Melilla are political refugees, most notably those from Syria. In response, the UN agency has called for greater involvement of the authorities with requests for asylum.

The UNHCR office in Spain has launched the Asylum is all , with which seeks to revalue the institution of asylum from different sectors of the Spanish civil society and foster a new dynamic for knowledge, participation and involvement of citizens in the debate on refugees and international protection and finding solutions to their situation.

UNHCR warns that the international community “is not due regard “to the goal of saving lives amidst the” confusion between coastal nations and regional blocs on how to respond to the growing number of people who undertake dangerous journeys by sea seeking asylum or immigration purposes. “
