BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Commission proposed rules more unified asylum for the block, in an attempt to prevent people who hope to obtain refugee status move by the EU countries and affect the area that allows passport-free travel.
in a wave of unprecedented immigration last year, 1.3 million people came to the European Union (EU), of which the majority ignored the legal restrictions and arrived on the shores of the Mediterranean to seek asylum in rich countries like Germany.
This led some countries in the bloc suspended the Schengen system that allows free movement between most EU nations.
“The changes will create a genuine common procedure asylum, “said Commissioner of Immigration of the EU, Dimitris Avramopoulos. “At the same time, establish obligations and duties for those seeking asylum to avoid secondary movements and abuse of procedures,” he said.
The proposal will standardize reception facilities refugees around the block and unify the level of state support they can get, establishing common rules on residence permits, travel documents, access to jobs, schools, social services and health care.
This measure shall accord to potential refugees labor rights more fast, but also set more obligations, which means that if not effectively cooperate with the authorities or are directed to an EU country of their choice instead of waiting where they are, their application for asylum could be at risk.
the waiting period of five years after which refugees are eligible for a residence longer could start over if they leave the country was assigned, the Commission said.
the plan, will now be reviewed by national governments and the European Parliament, it comes after the Commission proposed in May a system to distribute asylum seekers around the block, an idea that angered eastern European countries who refuse to accept refugees .
