Ponta is accused of crimes such as tax evasion, money laundering, conflict of interest and making false statements when he worked as a lawyer in 2007 and 2008, prosecutors said. At that time, Ponta was parliamentary. He denies the charges.
The prosecution also said in a statement the temporary freezing of the personal assets of Ponta. It is the Prime Minister who is accused Romania and see their assets frozen during his tenure.
It was not clear at first if Ponta could be arrested. It has immunity for some offenses, such as conflict of interest. But not for tax evasion and money laundering.
Ponta, 42, who is recovering from knee surgery, was questioned Monday morning in the Anti-corruption prosecutors’ offices. He climbed the stairs to the building on crutches and left about 30 minutes later without taking questions, citing his right to remain silent.
Prosecutors said on June 5 that the prime minister was suspect in a corruption investigation that has plunged the country into political crisis. The president, Klaus Iohannis urged Ponta to resign, but the prime minister refused. Ponta said he had not spoken to the president since June 5.
The prime minister himself resigned on Sunday as chairman of the Social Democratic Party, indicating he wants to prove his innocence.
