22 July 2015 11:24 Madrid, July 22 (PL) The Spanish government today warned about the possibility of suspending the autonomy of Catalonia in the event of default flagrant of its obligations as it can be a unilateral declaration of independence.

The Justice Minister Rafael Catala, recalled that article 155 of the Constitution allows to force a community to meet their obligations, for which there is a procedure which is in force.

Catalá issued the warning a day after the head List of candidates of Catalan independence forces, Raul Romeva, advanced the possibility of declaring independence unilaterally after the elections on September 27.

In an interview with Cadena Ser, the minister said no room for the start of a process of independence, as claimed by sections of the secessionist region of northwestern Spain.

He said that if an autonomous community violates the obligations imposed by the Constitution or laws so that seriously prejudicial to the general interest of Spain, the Government may take the necessary measures to compel compliance.

He noted that this requirement be held prior to the president of the autonomous region and, if not addressed with the approval by an absolute majority of the Senate to protect the public interest.

also he said the government will not contest the decree of convocation of the Catalan elections if this relates to ordinary regional elections.

The Spanish government rejects the plebiscitary character Catalonia authorities intend to give the elections and claims that this is only a vote to choose the regional parliament, as in all other regions.

The independence forces, however, claim that if they win the elections, the new parliament will have a secessionist mandate given by the people and therefore proceed to the separation of Spain within six to eight months.
