MOSCOW (Reuters) – More than two thirds of Russians believe that other countries have a military threat to the security of their nation, while most citizens now believe it is more likely a war than at any other time in this century, on Friday said an analysis group.
The Research Centre of the Russian Public Opinion said that 68 percent of respondents to its survey believed that other countries are a threat to Russian security.
The institution also noted that an index that measures how much people believe in possibility of the threat of war reached its highest level since 1999.
Russian state media and close to the Kremlin are presenting the fighting in eastern neighboring Ukraine as caused by the West and sometimes have highlighted the presence of foreign fighters conflict.
President, Vladimir Putin, who has adopted a broadly anti-Western stance during the crisis, said the conflict is being generated representatives NATO to “contain” Russia.
Senior Western officials accused this week Russia to redraw the map of Europe by force and threaten the Baltic states.
The center said it based its findings on interviews with 1,600 people across Russia on 14 and 15 February.
