ABC of Spain 2 / A lawyer has filed separate complaints against 38 mayors for not removing the Francoist symbols of their cities, considering that violate the Law of Historical Memory and could be responsible for a possible crime of disobedience.
During the presentation of one in Madrid, the lawyer Eduardo Ranz said that the council denounced must “respect and support” to the victims of the dictatorship and added that with the removal of these symbols seeks “victims stop feeling humiliated to wander the cities.”
Among the mayors, reported in the courts of their respective cities, belonging to different political parties, are those of Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Bilbao, Alicante, Oviedo, Lugo and Cordoba.
According to counsel, the Law of Historical Memory urges the government to take “appropriate measures” to remove objects or “commemorative” and “personal or collective exaltation of the military uprising, the Civil War and the repression of the dictatorship.”
In the case of Madrid, mentions in the list of Francoist symbols include the Arco Victory, two shields in stone at the Palacio de Santa Cruz, a fresco in the Cartel General of Staff of Defense, a plaque at the Palace of El Pardo and another in the Court of Auditors.
