Since last June a new UN resolution ensures that any prohibition or restriction Internet access to the government of a country imposes on its citizens is a violation of human rights and an attack on freedom of expression and free information, two basic rights of humanity.

According to claim from the nonprofit Article19, dedicated to fighting for freedom of expression in the world organization, more than 70 countries supported the resolution and thus managed to be approved, although no lack of nations opposed it, such as Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, South Africa and India, with the last three a not pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunately the attacks against freedom of expression on the Internet are increasingly common. In recent years in nations that are under stressful situations or even in conflict, first thing they do some rulers is to order the cessation of communications for the country, which could be seen as an inevitable military strategy, but the UN sees it as a violation of the right to stay informed.

Although the UN can not prevent 100% that this kind of blockades and restrictions continue happening in the world, with this resolution attempts to pressure to decrease. [Article19 via Verge]
