City of Madrid begins the withdrawal of Francoist monuments – El Universal (Venezuela)

Madrid .- The City of Madrid began the removal of monuments to personalities linked to the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939- 75), a decision protected by the so-called Law of Historical Memory, 2007.

On December 22 the Madrid municipal council approved with a majority vote of the left and the opposition Popular Party (PP ), withdrawal of five plates and monoliths honoring people linked to Franco in different parts of the city, Efe said.

According to municipal sources confirmed since last Friday 29 January they began to “remove traces” Franco and the first monuments erected were the shooting of eight religious and tombstones dedicated to political and military.

Government sources in the region of Madrid (PP) Act recalled that the heritage brand that such actions should be subject to consultation with the general direction of regional heritage, so proceedings were initiated to find out if any expedientar the City of Madrid.

In the next six months will continue removing more monuments and renaming streets and thirty places linked to the dictatorship, as approved in the last plenary session in December.
