NATO ratifies agreement with Russia, despite modifications – Prensa Latina

June 2, 2016 12:36 Brussels, June 2 (Prensa Latina) The Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) today confirmed the existence of a covenant not aggression signed in 1997 with Russia, despite modifications as less troops than originally promised. (PLRadio)

According to the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, the number of NATO military deployed in the Baltics and Poland will be “well below” what Russia requested in 1997.

After the pact -in which the allies agreed not to deploy a contingent of forces “permanent” combat and “substantial” in the soviéticas- exrepúblicas NATO says that he sees “no imminent threat” of Russia against any nation ally.

” we talk about a battalion for each of the three Baltic states and Poland. No made final decisions yet, but this is the proposal we have received from our military planners and this is the proposal discussed today within NATO ” said Stoltenberg in a conference call from Berlin.

four battalions were deployed in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland representing “between 3,000 and 4,000 soldiers,” added the Secretary General.

Thus, Stoltenberg confirms that the number handled so far is “well below” the so-called forces of “substantial” combat, including Russia, whose claims were “much higher” 19 years ago when the agreement was formalized.

“we do not want a new Cold War with Russia,” he said Stoltenberg before insisting that NATO remains open to dialogue but with the condition that the body maintain a posture “credible deterrence. Not to fight it but to prevent war, “he said
