Division of property – The Daily

The coalition that governs Catalonia is broken after 37 years of partnership.

In the parliaments of Spain and Catalonia staged these days breaking the coalition Convergence and Union (CiU), after the Democratic Union of Catalonia (UDC) decided to separate from the government led by Artur Mas, of Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC). For the first time in 37 years, the two parties will not be submitted together to the elections on 27 September. Although not officially informed of the reasons for the breakdown, it appears that due to differences over the sovereigntist path.

CiU was not a sovereignist strength, although advocated greater autonomy from the Spanish government. When in 2012 the social and political organizations calling for independence began to appear increasingly harder, CiU, under the impulse of the Catalan President, Artur Mas, it was also turning to the sovereigntist path. This tour had among its latter stages the referendum on independence, which was overruled by Justice at the request of Spanish- government and call elections for 27 September under the slogan expresses it is a vote on independence (which it may support by supporting the parties that defend).

In the past three years, Mas and his party became increasingly favorable to independence. Even the Generalitat officially drew up a roadmap so that if they win the elections the sovereigntist forces (represented mostly by CDC and Esquerra Republicana) is reached a declaration of independence, negotiated with Madrid and proclaimed unilaterally by Parliament .

Instead, UDC, which was always the minority force in the coalition, never agreed with secessionism, and do not adhere to the roadmap proposed by Mas. Two weeks ago, he submitted this issue to a vote of its membership, and a minimum percentage of votes (1351-1226) it was decided not to adhere to the roadmap. He participated in the vote 64% of the membership of UCD, estimated at about 4,000 people.

After this consultation CDC issued an ultimatum to UDC to be bend to its roadmap to be presented together, as CiU, in the elections of September. If he did, it would result in a break, and finally chose this way the UDC Government Committee last week. When the result of the vote was known UDC secretary general, Ramon Espadaler proclaimed: “CiU is dead, alive Union!”

Question of name

The divorce could be seen hours later, when the members of the UDC that were part of the Generalitat, the government of Catalonia, left office. UDC said that despite his departure from the Executive and the division of benches in the Catalan parliament, ensure governance and act like it’s official.

The consequences continued on Wednesday when the Spanish Chamber of Deputies CDC Stopes, with ten members, and UDC with six split. The situation in the Senate, where UDC has three seats and CDC 13, is different. There CDC and UDC decided to stay together and divide the powers that gives them form a parliamentary group, which lost if separated.

As if to prove that the separation was in good terms, the group’s spokesman, Josep Lluis clergy (CDC), said the division will be equally and not “mathematical” way.

Also this week, were dismantled accounts in social networks CiU, which were not closed but they lost the logos and colors of UDC and CDC. For example, in the image ofCiU Twitter is now the classic huevito shown by default when no picture.

In turn, while the CDU led by Josep Duran i Lleida out of a coalition 37, citing as an argument consistent with the history of his party, the Esquerra Republicana de Oriol Junqueras announced that joins the road map of Mas and presented him to the elections, which must depart “momentarily “for short.

On Saturday, in the event which launched the campaign for the elections of September 27, Mas called on all sovereignists to appear on the same list formations, assuming that CDC also may not present with their initials, and even the possibility of driving than he who lead, which, at least in principle, seems unlikely.

The possibility is not excluded that UDC suffers a split in the coming months, as there are several opposing currents and two people looking to lead the list for the elections, self Duran Lleida and his number two, Espadaler.

In addition, a third group, led by Antoni Castellà and the president of the Catalan Parliament, Núria de Gispert, he has already announced it will support list Mas “in order to be a candidate with the greatest possible unity for the elections, openly propose work to be an independent state “.

Before this ruling, Espadaler hinted that those who do not campaign for the UDC could be expelled from the party. “Union which will not do is play on two different applications; I would feel a lack of rigor and respect, “he said.
