Bayonne, France.- A Spanish Basque separatist, Sabin Mendizabal Plazaola, wanted on a European arrest warrant (MAE) issued by Madrid, was questioned Monday in southwest France, according to a source close to the case.

This member of the Basque separatist organization ETA, who lived in hiding for five years, was questioned at Saint Palais, in the region of Pyrenees-Atlantiques, according to the same source, citing AFP.

Plazaloa, born in 1979, was sentenced in 2009 to prison by the Spanish justice after having been found guilty of throwing Molotov cocktails against a trade and a team from the Ertzaintza (Basque autonomous police) in 2005 in the Basque Country.

“He took refuge in hiding in 2010 and was being sought since,” said this source.

ETA (Euskadi ta Askatasuna, Basque Homeland and Freedom in Basque) attacks made on behalf of their struggle for independence of the Basque Country and Navarre, which have claimed the lives of 829 people since 1959, according the Spanish authorities.
