‘Spain takes the initiative’ before worrying situation of the stocks in the Mediterranean

The Secretary General of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Andrés Hermida, presented a set of measures for the recovery of fishery resources in the Mediterranean, which could include a Plan Special Management for the period 2016 -. 2019
the presentation took place during a meeting with representatives of the autonomous communities of the Mediterranean, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) of all modalities affected sector and social partners .
the measures contemplated, from a global and comprehensive perspective, actions aimed both commercial fishing, sea fishing and recreation, which are articulated in five blocks, still pending final adjustments. . Including contributions received to block measures already presented in March at the sectoral meetings with the different authorities and stakeholders
The package of measures presented includes:
- Creating a worktable “ad hoc”, which will include the participation of all stakeholders, whose purpose will be to analyze the available information on the situation in the Mediterranean and propose alternative actions to existing .
- New management measures for marine recreational fishing.
- New technical measures for professional fleet trawl, purse seine and longline surface, in order to reduce fishing effort, with the establishment of new protection areas to fishing, review of the species authorized to capture and the establishment of maximum catch limits.
- Other measures of structural and socio-economic support for professional fleet of the same rules, which provide financial assistance to carry out temporary stoppages of up to two months a year, rising scales for definitive losses by scrapping and flexibility for contribution Mediterranean low for adjustments in other fisheries.
- Market measures and marketing, intended to promote responsible fish consumption and promotion through specific distinctive products from this area.
According to the Ministry, the meeting attendees appreciated the document and agreed on the concern about the situation of Mediterranean populations. They also recognized that, beyond fishing, there are more operators or factors that are affecting the poor state of resources so requested action in other areas such as pollution control, shipping or changes trophic among others.
