The Germans and Americans are increasingly skeptical about the free trade agreement being negotiated that the European Union and the United States, says a study published today and that shows that public support in both countries fell sharply in recent years.
Only one in five Germans believe that the Transatlantic Trade Association and Investment (TTIP, for its acronym in English) is a good thing, according to a study by market researcher YouGov for the Bertelsmann Foundation of Germany company.
One in three Germans rejected the deal altogether.
in the United States, only 15 percent of the people support it, according to the study.
in 2014, shortly after the negotiations began between Brussels and Washington, 55 percent of Germans were in favor of the agreement, while 53 percent the American public supported it.
the Bertelsmann Foundation says that the negative attitude of the Germans towards the TTIP is mainly due to fears about lower standards of the products, consumer protection and . labor market
the confidentiality of the negotiations on the agreement is also a problem. About 30 percent of Germans and 46 percent of Americans do not feel sufficiently informed about the TTIP.
The results of the study were published before the visit of US President Barack Obama, Sunday to Germany. One of the objectives of his visit is to promote the negotiations on the TTIP, which began in July 2013 and led to protests in Europe.
Officials from both sides of the Atlantic want to conclude negotiations by the end of this year. But analysts said it was unlikely that the talks achieve real progress under the Obama administration, which ends in January 2017. End
