Councillor Barcelona: feminist vision and LGTBI must be in local politics – Terra Peru

The municipal policies need to incorporate both vision and the feminist movement of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex, he said in an interview with Efe Councillor Lifecycle, Feminism and LGTBI the City of Barcelona, Laura Pérez.

“There is no gender-blind public policies all have a differential effect between men and women Therefore, municipal policies have to translate that vision. Mobility, urban planning, culture, health, all, “he said.

Perez, who participated this week in the III Summit of Local Agendas Gender held in the Chilean capital, explained that one of the priorities of the municipal government of Barcelona headed by the mayor Ada Colau is feminism.

And the other is the fight against violence, a problem which in his opinion requires a political agreement on a large scale.

“Since municipal politics we have to walk to the requirement of a pact of State and budgets with a focus on gender committed,” he said.

“Male violence is not only the murders, the murders are the tip of an iceberg that begins in the street harassment,” said the Councillor Barcelona.

So to cope, “we must move beyond violence within the couple” and unravel “certain biologicist system features” that is perpetuating a retrograde vision the roles that correspond to men and women.

Perez in Santiago had the opportunity to speak with the mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena, regarding the overwhelming public response expressed in a demonstration last January 7th following the succession of femicides in recent weeks.

In December 2015, 14 women were killed by men in Spain and in the first five days of January were seven other femicide.

A few weeks earlier, on November 7, tens of thousands of people, according to figures from the organizers, took to the streets of Madrid to demand that the fight against gender violence was considered a state problem.

“The response of the citizens’ movement was blunt: ‘Neither a woman less,’” Perez stressed.

Councillor Lifecycle, Feminism and LGTBI Barcelona City Council referred to the new way of doing politics emerging formations that have gained momentum in Catalonia and the rest of Spanish State in the last year and a half.

Perez, a member of the platform ‘Barcelona in Common’, acknowledged that “the public is still very demanding.”

“Here everyone does their part and we’re getting used to the institutional. We’re a very excited team work in a different way,” he said.

Regarding the new president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carlos Puigdemont, elected after the long period of interim emerged from the elections of September 29, Perez showed some reservations.

“It will be a good period if (the Government) do not follow the policies of cuts, if we have good communication and are aware of the needs of citizens in Barcelona, which does not few, “he said.

“And there will be good, he added, if your only goal is that within 18 months we are facing a scenario of unilateral independence with results of elections do not give them legitimacy to do it”.

“What we need in Catalonia are serious and committed policy,” concluded Councillor Barcelona.

At the Third Summit of Local Agendas Gender, which began on Monday in the Chilean capital, more than 400 personalities from 21 countries debated for four days on the local policies that have main target women.
