the third / Former Judge Manuela Carmena 71 became last May the new mayor of Madrid, overtaking the leadership that for 24 years had the Popular Party ( PP) in the Spanish capital. Through the Madrid platform and now with the help of Podemos, Carmena, who says politically independent, is an example of the political changes taking place in Spain. The mayor, who is in Chile participating in the III Ibero-American Summit of Local Agendas Gender spoke with La Tercera on the challenges of his term in Madrid and the political scene that exists in Spain, after the general elections not throw a clear majority among the parties.
You represent these new political pacts and civil platforms. How it has this period for you and what is your main objective?
My main objective is to do everything possible to improve the standard of living of the locals, they are better and more comfortable in this city. That’s the biggest goal I have. Madrid is a big city and requires a lot of dedication to get things improve on that line and I as new mayor of the city.
How do you unlock the political puzzle that we are then seeing a general election in Spain?
I have been a judge for all my life and I have no knowledge nor am I related to any political party, so I can not give clear impressions. I am working in the town hall (mayor), a municipal perspective.
But you came to office independently but with an agreement with other parties can and do you think that this is the trend of the that it will take and in Spanish Congress to form a government?
Yes, I think so, you have to get used to is very good sit and talk. Also everyone to see the other’s position and to dialogue.
Why do you think you’re living this political situation in Spain?
It is true that, somehow, there is a very large part of Spanish who want a renewal in the ways of acting in politics. They want to change the modus operandi of the traditional parties. Meanwhile, another group of Spaniards who do not prefer it, it gives them more confidence to continue with the traditional game and that is a debate and I think it is important to transfer the experience we are having our own in municipal politics. In local politics we are doing a lot of work agreed. Most of the decisions made are agreed, then I think that if we can agree and we are preparing to do so, may also agree on all parties and hope to form a government.
In the municipal politics, has had difficulties in management have reached the mayor with the support we and other parties?
All new experiences confrontación.Hacer processes generate a different policy, not from a party but from a public platform, is a very simple, very linked to the proximity of citizenship policy. I usually use public transportation so that all citizens make me comments. I have a different view and that generates some surprise, some feeling that things change.
Is it common that politicians in Spain have that closeness to the citizens?
I think not. It is rare to see a politician in the public space. Sometimes I meet people on the street or queuing in a supermarket. The other day I was in a photocopy shop and were very puzzled. The mayor had never done a line to make a photocopy, and is good because thus one chat with them for a while. It is a different way. The mayor is just one more among all neighbor who has to manage the interests and concerns of all
